During the days of slavery, the Alton area was part of the Underground Railroad which many slaves moved north toward their freedom. A monument was erected in honor of Elijah Lovejoy, an abolitionist editor. Robert Wadlow, the world's tallest man, called Alton home during his life. There is a statue and museum uptown Alton which tells about this gentle giant. Other areas of interest include the downtown antique district, the Melvin Price Lock and Dam, the Clark Bridge, and many parks and golf courses, just to name a few. There is truly something for everyone in Alton, Illinois.
