Description
The Plaquemine Knights of Columbus Council 970 is once again proud to sponsor this year’s International Acadian Festival which began in 1969. The related events start in August and culminate the weekend of October 18-20, 2002.
The Festival is a major fundraiser that allows us to support schools, churches and youth groups in the Plaquemine area. Our website is www.kc970.org and contains all the information concerning the festival as well as information about our local council.
Local high school senior girls vie for the coveted Evangeline crown as well as the honor that accompanies it. The girls who do not win the title remain as Indian Princesses to Evangeline throughout the year. On October 12th, we will present the court at a water ceremony on beautiful Bayou Plaquemine with the historic Plaquemine Locks and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church serving as backdrops.
The ceremony is performed at night and is most impressive as the girls are paddled by Indian guides in canoes and an Indian camp across the bayou, complete with bonfire and Cochise presiding adds to the atmosphere. Immediately after the water ceremony, a presentation ball is held at the Civic Center to formally present the court to Plaquemine and for last year’s Evangeline to present the new queen with her crown. We also announce our Parade Marshall for this year’s parade to be held on Sunday, October 13th. Afterward is dancing with a live band and plenty of fun for all.
We also host a cooking contest, art contest and a beauty pageant that ties in with the festival. All the winners’ trophies and ribbons will be presented on the main stage Sunday at the festival.
