Sweet Auburn - The Heart & Soul of Atlanta
The mile and half that makes up Auburn Avenue contains a concentration of African American history, heritage and achievement that is unique to Atlanta. When you walk along the street it is a stroll through living breathing museum, an constant updating of the African American experience in Atlanta and its impact on the world.
Almost everything that was and is important to the "Negro" experience and development in Atlanta had its birth on the Avenue. From the APEX museum, the Atlanta Daily World and Atlanta Life to the Odd Fellows Complex, Studio Plex lofts and galleries every building has it's own story to tell. Not about the bricks but the visionary leaders that built and made the buildings come alive.
The name "Sweet Auburn" was coined by J. W. Dobbs the grandfather of Maynard Jackson, because, as he stated "money ran like honey". Sweet Auburn was the center of business, education, politics, entertainment, social and religious life. In the 60's and until this day it is the center of the civil rights movement.
Many of Atlanta's great churches such as Ebenezer Baptist, Big Bethel AME, Wheat Street Baptist, First Congregational and Our Lady Of Lourdes helped to build and maintain the heritage of the Street.
Sweet Auburn is not just a street, it is a community, a spirit, a symbol of the ability of a people to achieve and overcome severe oppression, degradation and discrimination to build what Forbes magazine called the riches "Negro" street in America".
Their website is a tribute to our legends, heroes and heroines lest we forget the great contributions and sacrifices they made to get us to where we are today.
Their mission is also to serve those who are diligently working for the restoration and rebuilding so that Sweet Auburn might indeed reclaim it's rightful place as the "Greatest Street on The Planet".
