Columbus County
First Weekend of May
The North Carolina Strawberry Festival date is always the last Saturday in April and runs through the first Saturday in May.
On the last Saturday in April we kick off the festival with the "Day in The Park" activities which includes games, fireworks and a hog cooking contest. The admission is $1.00 to help cover the cost of fireworks. During the week we have a golf tournament, arts and crafts for viewing, and the Depot Museum is open to the public. We have a breakfast honoring the businesses in town, and on Friday of that week we have the Encounters. Then on the first Saturday in May we end our festival with a band concert, Dignitary Luncheon, Amateur arts and crafts, food vendors, parade, Scholarship Pageant and the Strawberry Dance.
Below you can read the history of The North Carolina Strawberry Festival that is held in Chadbourn, NC. This information was compiled by Mrs. Edna Yates.
Strawberry culture began in Chadbourn in 1895. The first planting of strawberries failed, but the next year six and three quarter areas of berries were planted and the grower sold berries for a value of $5,562. In 1897, six hundred thirty-two quart crates of berries were shipped from Chadbourn and in the following year, 1898, six thousand crates were shipped. This was a phenomenal increase of 1000 percent.
In 1907, the largest one day shipment of strawberries was made. One hundred eighty-railroad box carloads-36,000 crates or 1,152,000 quarts of strawberries-all of which had been harvested between sunrise and sunset was moved by rail from Chadbourn to points all over the country.
When the strawberry industry had succeeded for thirty years, area residents decided to inaugurate a festival in celebration. The first Strawberry Festival was held May 12, 1926. Continuing today as "The North Carolina Strawberry Festival", it is the oldest agricultural festival in North Carolina. Parade day, following week long festivities, is always the first Saturday in may of each year.
In the 1960's, twelve Civic Clubs in Chadbourn worked together to build a Civic Center for the town. It is used today for many public and private activities and is one of the centers for the annual Strawberry Festival.
Hope to see you on the first Saturday in May.
